Storytime Art: Day One!
Welcome to our first Honeybee storytime art session! Today’s book is the Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater, one of my favorites.
The theme of the book is to be true to yourself, follow your heart, embrace your individuality and get creative! Plus it's silly and fun and I hope your kiddos will enjoy it!
Storytime Activity Guide:
Watch the storytime video, pausing as needed, and then explore some of these fun activities!
Materials:
(If you need any materials, please let me know and I will put together a box for you to pick up)
Cardboard- save an amazon box or use a cereal box
Adult scissors for cutting cardboard
Long roll of paper or several pieces of copy paper taped together
Markers, crayons, colored pencils or oil pastels
Tempera or Watercolor Paints
Kwikstix of you have them
Glue: hot glue for adults, or white glue/glue sticks for kids
Prep:
Cover table with tablecloth
Cut simple house shapes from cardboard or thick paper
Set up supplies in easy reach
Open Ended Project:
Set out cardboard house shapes and lots of coloring options. Let kids explore adding color to the cardboard as they please. The more house shapes you prep, the bigger the neighborhood can be!
Extension: If you have cardboard scraps, they can add chimneys, windows, doors, and also use the scraps to make the houses stand up. This is where hot glue works wonders! White glue or glue sticks can work too.
Art Activity #1:
Using a single sheet of paper, encourage kids to draw the house of their dreams. What details will make it especially dreamy? What colors would they love? Would there be an interesting pet in the yard? How tall would the house be? Don’t forget important house details like windows and doors, trees in the yard, etc.
Art Activity #2:
Using a long piece of paper or several papers taped together, help kids draw a neighborhood like Mr. Plumbean’s street. The houses can all be the same or they can make each one different to represent different dream houses. Adults can get in on this one too, drawing their dream houses! I know mine would have a slide so we could get out of the house from an upstairs window. I would also have citrus trees in the yard and a cool catio.
Art Activity #3:
Use Legos or other building materials to design and build a house of your dreams. Take it one step farther and make a whole neighborhood. Work together with your siblings or family to design a whole village!
If you’re on instagram, I’d love to see what you make and do! Use #honeybeestorytimeart so I can see it too.
Thanks for encouraging a love of art and stories with your children, it means a lot to me!
